While Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird has received its fair share of accolades, there is another female-centric coming-of-age tale with a bit more bite about to hit theaters that merits attention, Joachim Trier’s Thelma. A taut, erotic thriller, Thelma recently screened at the New York Film Festival and is the official Norwegian OSCAR® entry for Best Foreign Language Film. It opens in New York City on Friday with a national expansion to follow. Check out the trailer below.

Striking notes similar to Julia Ducournau’s Raw, Thelma stars the mesmerizing Eili Harboe as a teenager who has left home for the first time to attend school in Oslo. Thelma initially has some difficulty fitting in, but eventually strikes up a friendship with Anja, played by actress/musician Kaya Wilkins (aka Okay Kaya). Their relationship quickly intensifies, and Thelma, who comes from a religious upbringing, is frightened by the feelings she is experiencing for her classmate. Her attempt to repress her attraction however does not go well, and instead activates some latent supernatural powers she possesses. She is left questioning her identity.

Trier, whose credits also include Louder Than Bombs (2015), Oslo August 31st (2011), and Reprise (2006), is a very methodical and austere filmmaker. With Thelma, he crafts a chilling, hypnotic, and menacing coming-of-age drama about one girl’s sexual awakening.

Thelma is being released theatrically via The Orchard. It opens on Friday, November 10 in New York City at the Angelika Film Center. Los Angeles comes next on November 24 with a national roll out to follow.
