On surface, Tom Sachs’ Space Program is a space-themed art project, but at its core, the artist and bricoleur is propagating a cult to realize his intergalactic fantasies. Launched in 2007 with a mission to the moon, Sachs’ program turns to the red planet for this immersive installation co-produced by Creative Time and Park Avenue Armory. Sachs and his followers have filled the Armory’s 55,000 square feet with sculptures resembling exploratory vehicles, a spacecraft, and a mission control station, all meticulously made using simple materials like foam core and plywood. Everything needed for a mission to Mars has been carefully drawn and is on display, from suiting protocol to tea ceremonies. Demonstrations and talks are planned throughout, and for those who want to join Sachs’ team, there is an indoctrination process. Watch out Scientology, the cult of Sachs is posturing to steal some of your jet propulsion.
