Nude Iggy Pop Focus of Brooklyn Museum Exhibit, Clothed Iggy at NYFF This Weekend
2016 is the year of Iggy Pop. In addition to releasing the critically acclaimed Post Pop Depression, the legendary rocker is the subject of an insightful documentary by Jim Jarmusch, and drawings of his naked body are the focus of a new book and art exhibition, which opens at the Brooklyn Museum in November. Not bad for a guy pushing 70.
The art exhibit, entitled Iggy Pop Life Class, is part of a project conceived by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller and organized by the Brooklyn Museum. In February, the musician methodically posed nude at the New York Academy of Art before a class of twenty-one artists. The participating artists came from all walks of life, and were a mix of students, practicing artists and retirees. The drawings that resulted will be featured in the museum exhibit, which will be on view from November 4, 2016 to March 26, 2017. In addition to the sketches, the show will include works depicting the male body taken from the museum’s collection to illustrate the changing cultural representations of masculinity over time. The exhibit is part of the museum’s A Year of Yes: Reimagining Feminism at the Brooklyn Museum, a yearlong program of exhibitions celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art.
A book documenting Deller’s project is also coming out in October via HENI Publishing. It will be include the drawings, an introduction by Deller and an interview with Iggy about his interest in participating in the project. The book is available for pre-order now here.
As for Jarmusch’s film Gimme Danger, it chronicles Iggy’s musical beginnings, and specifically his involvement with the seminal rock group The Stooges. The film, which had its world premiere at Cannes earlier this year, is a must-see for music fans and screens this weekend at the 54th New York Film Festival with Iggy and Jarmusch in person (tickets for the screening with Q&A are currently sold out, but stand by is an option, go here for details). You can view the trailer below.
Also, later next month ahead of Gimme Danger’s theatrical release on October 28, Iggy and Jarmusch will be coming together again to discuss the film with The New York Times. The Times Talk is scheduled for October 27 and tickets are on sale now here.
