Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds ‘Skeleton Tree’ Documentary in Theaters through Weekend
It’s the day Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds fans have been eagerly awaiting. The group’s 16th album, Skeleton Tree, is finally here. But, don’t expect Cave to be doing any many interviews to support it, that’s what Andrew Dominik’s film One More Time With Feeling is all about. The documentary, which was originally only going to be in theaters on September 8, the night before the album’s release, has extended its run. If you didn’t catch it last night, you can view it in New York in 3D at IFC Center, Metrograph or The Beekman Theatre this weekend.
Having its world premiere earlier this week at the Venice International Film Festival, One More Time With Feeling is Cave’s way of skirting potentially painful and uncomfortable questions about the death of his son. The tragedy occurred while the musician was working on Skeleton Tree and subsequently became the backdrop for the writing and recording of the album. Dominik, whose other credits include Killing Them Softly and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, mixes the band performing songs off the new record with interviews and other footage. Cave also chimes in with commentary and improvised musings.
Dominik opted to shoot the film in black-and-white and 3D. Cave was initially against the 3D but came around after the filmmaker showed him old black-and-white photos viewed through a stereopticon from the 50s. The effect is one of the images slowly coming to life. According to the Dominik, it addressed “the disembodied sound of the record”.
