★ Album Designer Creates Video for Bowie’s ‘I Can’t Give Everything Away’
As we all continue to try to process David Bowie’s passing, one of his longtime collaborators, Jonathan Barnbrook, has come up with his own way of paying tribute. Barnbrook, a designer who played an integral role in developing the visual identity for David Bowie’s ★, has created a video for ★’s third single “I Can’t Give Everything Away.” You can check it out below.
Barnbrook’s video is an animated visual interpretation of the song. Words float through a star-filled cosmos in the beautiful and hypnotic visual which Barnbrook hopes sends a positive message. Regarding the work, Barnbrook remarked “We start off in black and white world of ★, but in the final chorus we move to brilliant color, I saw it as a celebration of David, to say that despite the adversity we face, the difficult things that happen such as David’s passing, that human beings are naturally positive, they look forward and can take the good from the past and use it as something to help with the present. We are a naturally optimistic species and we celebrate the good that we are given.”
A group of musicians, including Sean Lennon, J. Mascis, Wayne Coyne, Michael Stipe, Cat Power, and more, recently came together in New York to pay tribute to Bowie at concerts organized by Michael Dorf. We, unfortunately, didn’t score tickets to either the Carnegie Hall or Radio City Music Hall affairs, but you can read up/see some of what went down over at Slate, and Brooklynvegan.
For those who still haven’t picked up a copy of Bowie’s ★, the album is available at Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, David Bowie Store, Vinyl and HMV.
