Cass McCombs Celebrates Release of ‘A Folk Set Apart’ Tonight in NYC

Cass McCombs celebrates his recently released rarities and b-sides compilation A Folk Set Apart tonight with a one-off musical blowout at Bowery Ballroom. Joining him for this very special event is indie supergroup Soldiers of Fortune.

Cass McCombs Folk Set Apart Record Release PartyOut in December via Domino Records, A Folk Set Apart: Rarities, B-Sides & Space Junk, Etc. is made up of songs from McCombs’ motley musical past dating 2003-2014. The prolific musician has spent his career exploring a variety of musical genres and this record brings all his various tangents together. The album also finds McCombs collaborating with a diverse group of musicians including Mike Gordon (Phish), Tim Dewit aka Dutch E. Germ (Gang Gang Dance), drummer Joe Russo (Furthur), Chris Cohen (Deerhoof), and Tim Cedar (from noise/punk band Ligament). We venture to bet that some of these sonic associates will participate in this evening’s festivities. For a sense of what will be on tap, check out a sampling of tunes from the record below.

As for the openers, Soldiers of Fortune is made up of Brad Truax (Interpol), Kid Millions (Man Forever, Oneida), Barry London (Oneida), Matt Sweeney (Chavez), Jesper Eklow (Endless Boogie), Mike Bones, and Papa Crazee. They appear in support of their debut full-length album Early Risers, which is out now on Mexican Summer. McCombs, as well as the likes of Stephen Malkmus and Ethan Miller chipped in with vocals. You can listen to McCombs’ contribution (“Old Roman Wall”) below and also check out the album’s track list.

At time of writing, the show is close to selling out, so act quick if you want in. Tickets are $18 and can be bought here.
