Riveting Political Documentary ‘Democrats’ Opens at Film Forum (Trailer)
We hope DOC NYC hasn’t documentaried you out, because there’s a fascinating film opening at Film Forum this week that anyone with an interest in the democratic process must see. Winner of the award for Best Documentary at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival, Camilla Nielsson’s Democrats goes inside the political process in Zimbabwe during a tumultuous time in the country’s history. Ruled by Robert Mugabe’s corrupt dictatorship since gaining independence in 1980, things came to a head in Zimbabwe during the country’s 2008 elections. Following a period of violence and bloodshed, the international community finally intervened and installed a temporary coalition government that was tasked with writing the country’s first constitution. Nielsson’s film follows the document’s turbulent development.
Filmed over the course of three years, Democrats focuses on the two political rivals, Paul Mangwana (ZANU-PF) and Douglas Mwonzora (Movement for Democratic Change), who are forced to find common ground in the creation of Zimbabwe’s constitution. Nielsson doesn’t judge, but rather closely observes as the two advisories navigate the legislative battlefield. At times tense (it had us on the edge of our seat), Democrats is a riveting political drama.
Check out the trailer for Democrats below. The film opens at Film Forum tomorrow and is currently scheduled to run through December 1. Filmmaker Camilla Nielsson will be in person for the 7:10pm show on Wednesday, November 18.
