Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros brought the love to Prospect Park Tuesday night, quite literally. Led by Alex Ebert, the band’s feel-good vibe had the crowd singing, swaying, and toking, and also inspired two marriage proposals. Incidentally, both women said yes. The show was a Celebrate Brooklyn! benefit concert. See photos below.

Taking the stage at 9pm, the group meandered through many of their hits, among which were 40 Day Dream, If I Were Free, Let’s Get High, Truth, and an extremely moving rendition of Brother. The band doesn’t work from a set list, but rather sees where the night takes them, often soliciting the audience for suggestions. The marriage proposals came towards the end of the night during Home. The group’s most popular song, it was previously sung as a duet between Ebert and Jade Castrinos, who left the band last year. In place of the section where the couple would exchange banter, Ebert now takes the mic out to the crowd and asks if anyone has a story to tell.

Ebert is good about sharing the spotlight with his bandmates. At Tuesday night’s show, Crash and Christian Letts each did stints fronting the group in song, and openers Preservation Hall Jazz Band also joined in for a tune.

The show had a strict 10:30pm stop due to park restrictions. Ebert tried to keep the party going. First, he brought musicians into the VIP tent for a jam, but when that didn’t really go as planned, he took to the streets with a bullhorn. People followed him up and down 9th street like he as the piped piper. We decided to cut out when he expressed confusion, did a 180 and headed back to the park.
