Silk Road Creator Gets Life in Prison, Deep Web Documentary Screens This Weekend

Alex Winter’s documentary Deep Web is essential viewing now that Ross Ulbricht has been sentenced to life in prison for his role in operating Silk Road. Back in February, Ulbricht was convicted of creating the anonymous drug-dealing online marketplace under the pseudonym Dread Pirate Roberts (DPR). Today, Manhattan federal Judge Katherine Forrest delivered her rather harsh sentence, and all but said she was making an example of Ulbricht as a way of deterring others.

Winter’s Deep Web, which is named for the hidden or invisible part of the World Wide Web not indexed by standard search engines, explores the inside story behind Silk Road, Bitcoin, and Ulbricht’s arrest. Narrated by Winter’s Bill & Ted co-star Keanu Reeves, the film was produced by cable channel EPIX and premiered at SXSW in March. In what can be seen as a fortunate stroke of serendipity, New Yorkers can catch the film followed by a Q&A with Winter and WIRED’s Andy Greenberg at the Brooklyn Film Festival on Saturday, May 30 at 8pm at Windmill Studios. Otherwise, the film is enjoying its world television premiere on EPIX this Sunday, May 31 at 8pm ET/PT, 7pm CT.

For a taste of what’s in store, check out Deep Web‘s trailer below as well as a video infographic explaining what the deep web is and a recent interview director Alex Winter did with The Young Turks.
