Kurt Vile Covers ‘Squidbillies’ Theme Song
Kurt Vile is the latest musician to cover the Squidbillies theme song. You can find his rendition below, as well as a “behind the scenes” video. He had some fun with the lyrics.
Now in its 10th season, Squidbillies is an animated series on Adult Swim that follows the Cuyler family, a clan of Squids living in rural Georgia. The show has a history of enlisting well-known musicians to do covers of the theme song, which was originally written and performed by country music singer Billy Joe Shaver. The theme is an excerpt from Shaver’s song “Warrior Man”, and while other stanzas from the song have been used, the one most often gone with goes as follows:
My dreams are all dead and buried
Sometimes I wish the sun would just explode
When God comes and calls me to his kingdom
I’ll take all ya sons of bitches when I go!
Let Her Blow!
Among those who have covered the song in the past include Jason Isbell, Lucinda Williams, King Khan and the Shrines, Dwight Yoakam, and Neko Case.
For Season 10, they’ve gathered quite an impressive lot to lend their vocal chords to the endeavor. Last week, Adult Swim shared Father John Misty’s version, which you can also find below. Other musicians you’ll find this season include The B-52s, Sharon Van Etten, Jimmy Cliff, and Rebecca Schiffman.
As for Vile’s cover, he doesn’t go as symphonic as Father John Misty. Rather, Vile takes a more strip down indie rock/country-esque approach. And, as you can see from the video below, he was particularly excited to sing the “sons of bitches” verse.
Season 10 of Squidbillies premiered on Sunday, July 10. If you missed the first episode you can watch it here. Episode 2 is set to air on Sunday, July 17 at 11:30 p.m. (ET/PT) on Adult Swim.
