Celebrating its 20th Anniversary, the fest is known for showcasing the best and boldest theatre. Nearly 200 troupes and dance companies from around the world are taking part in this year’s festivities, which kick off today and run through August 28. From the dark to the comical, immersive experiences to one-man shows, if you enjoy a good adventure, FringeNYC is definitely worth exploration.
To help you on your journey, we’ve combed through and come up with some recommendations. First off, we suggest looking into the lost-of-entry options found in FringeAL FRESCO. This fest sidebar features three outdoor productions that are free to attend, no ticket necessary. In the mix are Department of Fools’ A History of Servitude, Everyday Inferno Theatre Company’s Iphigenia Among the Taurians and Peregrinus, from Poland’s The KTO Theatre.
As for FringeNYC’s main slate, here are our picks.
Homo Sapiens Interruptus
Any true rock music fan should have this show on their radar. Written and performed by Carlos Dengler, better known in music circles as Carlos D, former bassist of Interpol, Homo Sapiens Interruptus is a one-man show that finds Dengler revisiting his life leading up to and including his involvement with Interpol.
The Company Incorporated
Writer/actor Julie Katz takes on San Francisco start-up culture in her satirical one-woman show The Company Incorporated. Previously performed under the title Grey Matter, the show received critical acclaim during its run at San Francisco’s Marsh Theater.
Diva
Diva is a black comedy from the land down under. Written by and starring Tiffany Barton, the show tells the story of an eccentric, down-on-her-luck, agoraphobic New York Opera singer.
All Together Now
Tickets to Ilana Simons’ immersive play All Together Now will be a hard to come by as the show only seats 20. It finds the audience lying down in a handmade tent and treated to an animated dreamscape of family and love.
Pryor Truth
Richard Pryor is fêted in Pryor Truth, a production written and performed by Khalil Muhammad. Told through the lens of one of Pryor’s re-occuring characters, Mudbone, the show shines light the man behind the mystique.
The Secret Life of Your Third Grade Teacher
From two-time Moth GrandSLAM champion Micaela Blei comes a comedic one-woman show about her experiences as a third grade teacher. Made up of a series of stories weaved together, this production is for adult audiences and touches on “classroom disasters, secret loves and the dangers of playing pretend.”
“Power!” Stokely Carmichael
Fresh off it’s second run at the Capital Fringe, “Power!” Stokely Carmichael seeks to inspire audiences at FringeNYC. Written and starring Meshaun Labrone and directed by Jennifer Knight, the play brings the voice of late Civil Rights leader Stokely Carmichael to life.
Walken on Sunshine
A filmmaker desperately searches for Christopher Walken after lying to investors about having him in his movie, in Walken on Sunshine, a fast-paced comedy written by and starring Dave Droxler. Expect improvisation and a musical number or two in this funny and absurd show.
The New York International Fringe Festival runs August 12-28, 2016 at variety of theaters across New York City. For most shows, tickets are $18. For additional information visit FringeNYC.org.
