‘Adam Green’s Aladdin’ Now Playing, Green Heading out on Worldwide Tour

Adam Green Aladdin tourIt’s finally time for Adam Green’s genie to be let free from its bottle. As we reported back in January, Green has made his own film adaptation of Aladdin. Entitled Adam Green’s Aladdin, the cinematic work is described as being “a hyper-sensory, poetic and humorously subversive take on the Classic Arabian Nights tale.” From the trailer, which is included below, you can tell the film is pretty trippy. In conjunction with the film, which is premiering this week in New York City, Green is releasing a soundtrack, and will be heading out on a worldwide ‘Aladdin Tour.’ The props from the film will also be on display at The Hole art gallery for a limited time.

Adam Green’s Aladdin is definitely not a G-rated affair. Aladdin, played by Green, is an indie-rock singer who lives with his dysfunctional family and likes to party every now and again. When his mysterious Uncle Jack comes to town, they head out a hike that results in Aladdin happening upon a magical genie named Mustafa, played by Francesco Clemente, and his 3D printer lamp. From there, things start to spiral out of control. Aladdin hooks up with the socialite daughter of the perverted Sultan who rules over his town, and his sister joins the rebellion. Ultimately, the film is a fable about one man’s quest for spiritual redemption in the Internet age. In addition to Green and Clemente, the film features Macaulay Culkin, Natasha Lyonne, Alia Shawkat, Jack Dishel, Har Mar Superstar, Devendra Banhart, Bip Ling, Zoe Kravitz and more.

Shot in a warehouse in Red Hook, Brooklyn last summer, the film has a wonderful handmade quality to it. The sets are psychedelic, painted in bold colors and constructed out of phone books, newspapers, glue and house paint. Complimenting the sets are a quirky assortment of props made by Green, like a giant camel, a Ferrari, and a sad potted plant. The film is backed by an easy-on-the-ears soundtrack crooned by Green and featuring Rodrigo Amarante (Little Joy), Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint), and Josiah Steinbrick (Devendra Barnhart). Aladdin (the album) is produced by Noah Georgeson and comes out April 15 via Totally Gross National Product. You can check out videos for two tracks below, “Nature of the Clown” and “Never Lift a Finger.”

So, now that we have whet your whistle for Green’s glorious and psychedelic project, you’re probably wondering how you can catch it. In New York, the film is screening at the Nitehawk on Saturday, April 9 at midnight and Tuesday, April 12 at 7:30pm. As mentioned above, immersive sets and props from the film are on display at The Hole from April 7-14. The film is also screening nightly from April 8-13 at 7pm in a makeshift theater at the gallery. Tickets are available here. The film has its West Coast premiere on Thursday, April 14 at Cinefamily. Additionally, Green is going on tour to promote the music from the film. His first concert is Friday, April 15 at the Satellite in Los Angeles. He then returns to New York to play Baby’s All Right on Tuesday, April 19 (tickets are $17 and are available here). These two shows don’t include a screening of the film, but some of his other appearances do. For a complete list of Green’s activities, see below.
